Radio Frequency Monitor Selection

A Radio Frequency Monitor (or Meter) is defined as an instrument, which can measure the electrical power relative to radio waves, typically somewhere in the range of about 100 MHz to 40 GHz.

An RF Monitor is used to help workers identify when they have entered an active RF field. RF Monitors should be selected and applicable to the frequency bands that a worker is expected to encounter on a specific job site. RF Monitors should receive an annual recalibration with documentation done by the manufacturer or a manufacturer approved entity. RF monitors do not protect workers from the hazards presented by RF. Workers still need to understand the limitations of maximum permissible exposure and the hazards associated with them.

•        RF Monitor selection should be based on the expected frequencies the workers will encounter

•        Only an accurately calibrated RF monitor should be used

•        Always follow the FCC guidelines in accordance for maximum permissible exposure (MPE) for workers

•        Always use, adjust, store and follow the manufacturers guidelines with the proper use of an RF monitor

•        RF monitors with visual and audible alerts are typically the most user friendly

•        An RF monitor will only alert a person of the presence of RF, a Competent Person will ultimately need to mitigate the associated hazards
