NATE to Testify Before Congress

NATE Chairman Jim Tracy Invited to Provide Testimony at Congressional Hearing on Broadcast Repack Transition

(Washington, D.C.) - The National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) announced today that Chairman Jim Tracy, CEO of Legacy Telecommunications, Inc. in Burley, Washington, has been invited to provide witness testimony at the upcoming U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing. The subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), will conduct a hearing entitled “The Broadcast Incentive Auction: Update on Repacking Opportunities and Challenges” on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 10 AM EDT in Room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is in the midst of reorganizing broadcasters into remaining TV bands following the spectrum incentive auction earlier this year. Thursday’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing will provide members of Congress the opportunity to receive an update on the FCC’s repacking process.

“NATE’s diverse membership encompasses companies and workers involved in both the wireless and broadcast industries and this hearing provides the Association with a unique platform to provide members of Congress who serve on this influential subcommittee with tangible examples and technical details on the repacking transition activities that are currently taking place at tower sites across the country,” said NATE’s Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Director and Wireless Industry Network D.C. Liaison Jim Goldwater. “Additionally, the subcommittee hearing will provide a forum to discuss some of the NATE safety resources, industry standards and workforce development initiatives that are available to the marketplace to help support a safe and efficient repack,” added Goldwater.

In addition to Chairman Jim Tracy, other witnesses invited to address the subcommittee include the following individuals:

• Scott Bergmann, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, CTIA;
• Rick Kaplan, General Counsel and Executive Vice President, National Association of   Broadcasters;
• Rebecca Murphy Thompson, General Counsel and Executive Vice President, Competitive Carriers Association;
• Lyn Plantinga, Vice President and General Manager, NewsChannel 5 Network; and
• Patrick Butler, CEO, America’s Public Television Stations.

“The broadcast incentive auction empowered broadcasters, businesses, networks, and consumers to play a role in the way that our nation makes spectrum allocation decisions, and it successfully cleared 84MHz of spectrum while raising $19.8 billion in bids. It is critical the FCC works expeditiously to repack the remaining broadcasters without disruption to consumers. I look forward to receiving an update on our continued efforts to usher in a new era of wireless broadband,” said Chairman Blackburn.

Thursday’s “Broadcast Incentive Auction: Update on Repacking Opportunities and Challenges” hearing will be webcast live at the following link: http://energycommerce.house.gov/. Webcast viewers are encouraged to share their thoughts on the hearing and the Broadcast Repack topic on via social media using the #SubCommTech hashtag.
