Chairman’s Message
The NATE 2005 Conference & Exposition is quickly approaching. I hope you have registered, made your hotel reservations and travel arrangements. If not, there’s no time like the present to get this done. With NATE celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, it’s destined to be one of our best shows. I hope to see you all there.

First of all this month, I would like to thank those of you who sent letters to North Carolina Department of Labor to voice your concern over certain items in their draft tower standard. I understand that well over 100 letters were sent! Your overwhelming response helped to send a clear message to the good folks working on this standard how serious we take this issue. At this writing, we are still working with NCDOL to affect a few changes to make the standard more reasonable for those whom it will affect.

Second I’d like to thank each of you who voted in the local, state and federal elections and in the recent NATE Board of Directors’ election. Taking the time to exercise our civic duty is an important right and privilege. I think too many take their civil liberties for granted. There are undoubtedly many people in this world that would like to have the right to exercise the freedoms we enjoy in this nation.
2004 shaped up to be a better year for our industry. Tower accidents were down over previous years, insurance premiums seemed to stabilize and the economy began its rebound. I hope that each of you have benefited from these positive trends. Furthermore, I hope that you will be able to build on the things you learned in 2004 to make your 2005 even better.

Just for fun I’ll leave you with some quotes from one of America’s treasures, the late Will Rogers.

1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.

2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.

3. There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman ... neither works.

4. Never miss a good chance to shut up.

5. Always drink upstream from the herd.

6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket.
8. There are three kinds of men: the ones that learn by reading; the few who learn by observation; the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence.

9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

10. If you're riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.

11. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back.

12. AND FINALLY: After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral? When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.

Work hard and be safe!
