From the NATE Office
Although the April Tower Times is always set aside to be the comprehensive “Show Recap” issue, I want to jump the gun a little and thank everyone who participated in NATE 2004 in Nashville. Once again the Associa-tion’s premiere event was a great success and I thank everyone involved for being part of another great show for NATE. My article in April will go into further detail regarding the show.

However, there is one accomplishment discussed at the NATE show that I don’t want to wait a month to share. The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has announced the completion of TIA 1019 – Structural Standards for Steel Gin Poles Used for Installation of Antenna Towers and Antenna Supported Structures. The new Gin Pole Standard is now available for purchase.

The completion of the standard shows the value of having NATE members in leadership roles in TIA.

The Gin Pole Standard will have a dramatic affect on safety during gin pole use. It not only will help assure gin poles are designed and maintained for their intended loads, but it will substantially assist engineers in determining the loads exerted on towers during the erection and modification process, thereby assuring the safety of the tower itself during construction.

The value the new Gin Pole Standard will have on tower safety for those tower erectors who use gin poles is tremendous, and NATE members should be extremely proud of the leadership, both in terms of association participation and financial contributions that led to this important accomplishment. The standard is the result of hard work and dedication by numerous NATE members over the past several years. On behalf of the entire Association, I want to offer our thanks to Ernie Jones, Gordon Lyman, Don Doty, and Craig Snyder for their outstanding efforts on this project.

NATE’s involvement with industry standards has grown dramatically over the past few years. From the Gin Pole Standard to NATE’s current efforts to develop a climber training standard, the Association continues to demonstrate the impact the tower erection industry can have on safety and education by individual companies coming together for the benefit of all.

To all NATE members, congratulations on the continued success of your association!
