Chairman’s Message
I just returned from the NATE Summer Conference and I thought it would be appropriate to provide some perspective for those members who attended and for those who could not make it.

Let me offer to those of you who couldn’t break away during our typically busy summer season, I understand your pain. Many of us are experiencing some of the busiest times we’ve seen in a few years. Somewhat unexpected, but who’s going to complain?

Even the broadcast market has been fairly hammered the last 24 months, though the July FCC deadline had something to do with it; it surely doesn’t explain it all.

The wireless side has also been under a full-court press to get things done for some time now with no let-up in sight.

I chose the theme of my summer opening remarks to center around the premise, “Good things take a long, long time to occur and bad things happen very quickly.” I can’t claim credit for originating the statement, but I’ve never read a more accurate and descriptive sentence that perfectly sums up NATE and our efforts to improve the industry.

NATE started out to be the voice of the industry, become the focal point of safety and educational materials, have a strong voice in Washington and make real improvements in the industry. By all measures, NATE has done all of those things.

As I looked around the room at those who attended the summer event, I saw many familiar faces whom I know have worked long and hard to make the industry better and safer. I also noted some who are no longer here. I must admit to being a little overwhelmed.

We have access to the latest and best equipment, training, tools and employees, yet accidents are occurring at a frightening pace. Gordon Lyman recently sent me two photos. They depicted workers free-climbing with body belts and only positioning devices. These pictures were taken within a stone’s throw of one of the best manufacturer of safety equipment and PPE.

It is clear to many of us that individual behavior must be addressed. It occurred to me that I could not think of a better bunch of people to tackle this, our next challenge, better than those of you who were sitting in front of me at that presentation.

Please, let us all rededicate ourselves to achieving greater safety awareness.
